The Hits Collection
(Home video)
The Hits / The B-Sides is a 3CD box-set compilation album by Prince. It was released simultaneously with The Hits 1, The Hits 2 (which comprised the first two discs of the set) and The Hits Collection home video in September 1993.

The set contains most of Prince’s most well-known songs from 13 studio albums, released originally between 1978 and 1993 (Batman being the only album not represented). The third CD, known as The B-Sides, contained 18 previously-released b-sides (in their edited form where there was one), as well as an unreleased version of a relatively obscure song, 4 The Tears In Your Eyes, and a previously-unreleased track, Power Fantastic.

First steps

Warner Bros. had initially considered releasing a larger 4-5 disc box set, but this was quickly rejected as the retail price was considered to be prohibitive. Prince contributed six previously-unreleased songs to the whole set, and at one point wanted to be more involved in the release, but Warner Bros. were already behind schedule on the set, and in the end paid Prince not to be involved.

Promotion

Pink Cashmere was released as a single two weeks before the album’s release. Peach was released as a single two months after the album’s release (three weeks after the album’s release in the UK), and Nothing Compares 2 U was also available as a promotional release in the USA on the same day.

Some territories also received a re-release of Controversy as a single the following month (with an entirely different tracklist and appearance than the 1981 release). Pope was also available as a promotional-release only in the UK (with no commercial release).

The album reached number 19 on The Billboard 200, and number 6 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums Chart.

The album has sold well since its release, and was certified platinum by the RIAA (1,000,000 copies shipped in the US) in late 1993. It was also certified gold (100,000 copies sold in the UK) by the BPI in 2013.

Prince was shooting for the top of the charts with Graffiti Bridge, and he missed. The movie was a disaster, causing the soundtrack to sell very poorly. Despite its poor showing, Graffiti Bridge is not a bad album; in fact, it's often very good. Prince wrote all of the songs, but only performed a little over half the tracks, leaving the rest for The Time, Mavis Staples, and Tevin Campbell. With the exception of The Time's slamming 'Release It' and Campbell's 'Round and Round,' the best songs are the ones Prince performed himself. The George Clinton collaboration 'We Can Funk,' the psycho-blues of 'The Question of U,' the sinewy single 'Thieves in the Temple,' and the pop/rock of 'Can't Stop This Feeling I Got,' 'Tick, Tick, Bang,' and 'Elephants & Flowers' make Graffiti Bridge a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
